After many many years of searching, I’ve finally assembled this one-of-a-kind find: a complete, two-halved propeller from the iconic Curtiss HS-2L flying boat, rooted in the heart of World War I aviation history. This journey began with one half, and only fifteen years later did I discover the matching piece. Incredibly, both halves are from the same renowned manufacturer, Paragon, crafted from the same type of wood, with identical brass tips, and serial numbers only 297 apart. With at least five different manufacturers producing propellers for the HS flying boats—each with unique wood types, stampings, and brass finishes—finding and matching a set like this is nearly impossible.
The Curtiss HS series was a line of single-engine patrol flying boats developed for the U.S. Navy during WWI and produced in large quantities between 1917 and 1919. The HS-2L, specifically designed for anti-submarine patrols, saw widespread deployment from French bases and continued service until 1928 due to its robust design. Originally a twin-engine craft, the HS evolved to a single-engine model, culminating in the Liberty-powered HS-2L with extended wingspan for larger bombs—a true workhorse of the war. Following the war, surplus HS-2Ls served various roles, from the U.S. Coast Guard to civilian uses worldwide, with many exported to countries including Brazil and Canada.
This rare propeller is not just an aviation artifact; it’s a remarkable testament to WWI history and Paragon craftsmanship. Forget a Warhol or Basquiat—this is a statement piece on an entirely different level. No other collector will have anything remotely like it, making it an extraordinary showpiece in any setting.
